What’s Happening

» by User Imagecharlotte in: travel

A couple posts down I made a “derogatory” remark about the visitors to the Jersey Shore. I don’t consider it derogatory because I’ve heard it all my life. Shoobies or Shoebies are the people who come “down the shore” for a day or two at a time. Way back when they used to travel with their lunch packed in shoe boxes.. hence the term “shoebies”.

But anyway.. for the Shoobies or Shoebies out there here is a link to things happening “down the shore” directly form Shoobie.org. You’ll find news, events and more.

Michigan tourists are called “Fudgies”, because they go to Mackinac Island for the day and buy tons of their famous fudge. And then of course there are the retirees who spend the summer in Michigan and winters in Florida, they are called “Snowbirds”. I’m sure every State has some kind of nickname like that for their tourists!

I have heard the term “bennie” but shoebie was a new one for me.

If it were not for the bennies and shoebies visiting the Jersey Shore beaches, every day at the beach would be the same boring event; listening to local soccer moms whining about their kids not getting to play in the latest PopWarner game, or bragging about their new paver driveway or whining and complaining about some other soccermoms smart (or dull) kids. WHAT A BORE!

Bring on the excitement at the beach; Yes, I have been living on the Jersey Shore since 1977 (Long Branch, Asbury Park, Point Pleasant) but before that I would spend incredibly exiciting beach days at Jones Beach (LI) or Brighton Beach (Bklyn) or Manhattan Beach (Bklyn) were people would have dance music playing loud, food, beer - it was great!!

Fudgies. . . This brings to mind the guy that used to walk around the Brooklyn beaches selling Fudge Popsicles.. He would walk around toting this ice cold cooler bag full of fudge popsicles shouting as he walked through the tanning bodies. . .. FUDGIE WUDGIE…… FUDGIE WUDGIE……… FUDGIE WUDGIE….. lol it was a funny then (1970’s) as it is now.

I didn’t mind them so much before casinos opened down here. Since the casinos opened the traffic has been hell!
